Villages have become a byword for English eccentricity and olde-world charm. 

There’s something about the thatched-roof cottages, well-tended village greens, and duck ponds that make life amble along at an altogether gentler pace - the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Even the names of Lincolnshire’s picturesque coastal and rural villages - Barton-on-Humber, Old Bolingbroke - conjure up idyllic English scenes. And apart from the great names, many of the villages located around the Lincoln Edge make ideal bases from which to explore the spectacular Fens.

The award-winning village of Washingborough has footpaths that take you along the banks of streams or up onto higher ground for stunning views of the surrounding countryside, and the 16th Century Ferry Boat Inn with its low-beamed ceiling is the perfect reward for your exertions.

Anyone with a love of poetry should visit Somersby, the birthplace of Alfred Lord Tennyson. And if you feel suitably inspired, the wild bird sanctuary at Saltfleet should provide plenty of imagery for a verse or two.

Many Lincolnshire villages are steeped in history, from quaint churches to ancient ruins - Tattarshall’s 15th century castle is well worth a visit. Village life may be simpler, but it certainly isn’t dull.
