Investigate the origins of Sherlock Holmes at Portsmouth Museum

Portsmouth, Hampshire

Discover more about the creator of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes at Portsmouth Museum.

It's no secret that the legendary Sherlock Holmes was thought up by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle whilst living in Portsmouth. Nowadays, the city is home to a large collection of Conan Doyle memorabilia, on display in two exhibitions covering the ground floor of Portsmouth Museum: ‘A Study in Sherlock’ and 'You Don't Know Sherlock, Yet'.

And don't miss out on exploring the rest of this free museum. The Story of Portsmouth exhibition looks at how life has changed in the city over the centuries through room reconstructions, historical memorabilis and even working amusement machines. The fine and decorative art gallery is also a must-visit, which features a wide range of furniture, ceramics and paintings by British artists from the 17th century to the present day.
