Discover this beautiful region’s living larder by dining at fantastic restaurants and sampling great local produce and dishes.
One of England’s finest restaurants, two-Michelin-starred L’Enclume is a reason in itself to visit this well-stocked region in England’s northwest, and a remarkable place to taste local ingredients cooked with pride.
Cumbria also boasts food so good it’s gained royal approval – Baxter’s Morecambe Bay potted shrimps hold a Royal Warrant from The Queen. Cumbria’s history as a centre of the spice trade gave rise to potted shrimps, as well as Cumberland sausage, sticky toffee pudding and Grasmere Gingerbread – all must-try items. Take home Kendal Mint Cake, made to a secret recipe and popular among climbers and mountaineers – Edmund Hillary took it up Mount Everest!
Even the water from the region’s fells is put to delicious use, with over 40 microbreweries in the area using it to produce tasty beers and ales.
L’Enclume is 15 miles (24 km) from Kendal, which is 2 hours 50 minutes from London by train.
