Spend a peaceful afternoon at Castle House and grounds, one-time home to Sir Alfred Munnings and his wife Violet, and soak up its homely atmosphere.
Described by Munnings as ‘the house of my dreams’, Castle House and grounds is set in the beautiful countryside in the Dedham Vale - also known as ‘Constable Country’. It has been kept much the same as when the artist lived and worked here.
Wander through the rooms of this elegant Tudor and Georgian building, the walls of which are laiden with paintings from the largest single collection of his work. Get an intimate ‘behind the scenes’ view of this prolific painter through the materials and affects still present in his Studio.
Enjoy refreshments in the Garden Café, looking out on the grounds which were the backdrop to many of his paintings, whilst horses can still be seen in the surrounding fields of the estate, half a century after the artist’s death.
