History and boat trips at The National Waterways Museum

Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

The National Waterways Museum is a place where time slows down and history comes to life.

The National Waterways Museum is in a stunning location on the banks of the Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal. Start your day exploring the handsome historic buildings, home to the museum and extensive in-door displays.

Climb aboard the canal boat, Centaur, for a boat trip on the Shropshire Union Canal. The 30-minute boat trip takes you through a fascinating industrial landscape. Your tour guide will tell the stories behind the passing bridges and quaysides and bring to life the changing fortunes of the canal and its people.

You can stroll around the locks, docks and warehouses at Ellesmere Port, and marvel at the wildlife surrounding the canal. Then visit its forge, stables and workers cottages, before heading to the gift shop for a little something to remember the day.
