Alimentum is firmly in the stratosphere of England's dining elite. But its prices show its feet are firmly on the ground.
Mark Poynton began his illustrious career in food working as a 15-year-old waiter at the Queen Hotel in Chester. Nowadays, with a fleet of awards under his belt, Poyton can be found some 200 miles south, at Cambridge's celebrated Alimentum, a restaurant he took over in 2010.
There's little doubting Alimentum's credentials, with a Michelin star and three AA Rosettes to its name. But don't let the gongs fool you: there's little of the elite in its prices. Slow cooking and sub-prime cuts are nurtured to give dishes a fuller flavour, and for the adventurous there's a seven-dish taster. Just make sure you'll fit out the door afterwards…
