There’s plenty to keep you busy in Helmsley. Stylish boutiques, antique shops and galleries surround Helmsley’s handsome main square and Helmsley’s lively Friday market is a must-visit.

Food fans will love Hunters of Helmsley, an award-winning delicatessen voted the UK’s Best Small Shop 2015, and artisan bakery Cinnamon Twist. Try the Black Swan Tearoom for a champagne afternoon tea, and sample craft ale at the Helmsley Brewing Company.

But first, build up your appetite in Helmsley Walled Garden, a changing canvas of flowers, fruit and vegetables, dating back to the 1750s or walk to the nearby ruins of Rievaulx Abbey from Helmsley Castle.

Helmsley accommodation is equally tempting. The contemporary Feversham Arms Hotel has a sumptuous spa, while just out of town at Harome, The Star Inn offers Michelin-starred dining and elegant rooms.

Helmsley is 24 miles (39 km) from York, which is 2 hours north of London by train.
