500 years of iconic and intimate portrayals of children through art, including Van Dyck and Holbein, with paintings from The Royal Collection including pencil sketches by Queen Victoria of her 9 children.
'Painting Childhood' and 'Childhood Now' feature royal dynastic portraits of children alongside intimate portrayals of artists' own children, including contemporary work by artists including Chantal Joffe.
For the first time, swiftly drawn preparatory sketches by Van Dyck and Holbein are shown next to their finished masterpieces. Artists throughout the centuries have captured the fleeting face of childhood with moments of sadness and of joy.
