August events: Eat, drink and be merry at the Newlyn Fish Festival
Newlyn, Cornwall
Celebrate the Cornish fishing community’s hard work and delicious produce at the Newlyn Fish Festival.
The town of Newlyn in Cornwall is justifiably proud of its fishing heritage, so each summer puts on its very own Fish Festival to showcase the local produce alongside arts and crafts. A packed programme of events includes live cookery demonstrations, a fish auction, musical performances, theatre and children’s entertainment.
One of the highlights is the Lugger-Rowing World Championship, which sees beautiful, oar-propelled boats rowed the length of Newlyn Harbour by teams in a hard-fought contest for the Gold Pilchard – a sight that’s not to be missed. If you want an insight into what makes a Cornish fishing community tick, the Newlyn Fish Festival is a great place to start.
Just so you know, the Newlyn Fish Festival has taken a break for 2019, but will be back in full swing in 2020.
