Peep inside Whitby's famous Fortune’s Kippers smokehouse and awaken your senses to the flavours, tastes and smells of long ago.
Established in 1872 by William Fortune, Fortune’s Kippers, nestled beneath the ancient cliffs under the gaze of St. Mary’s Church, is located towards the end of a narrow cobbled street known as Henrietta Street, beyond the famous 199 steps leading up to Whitby Abbey.
As you walk towards the smokehouse, the all-pervasive aroma of wafting oak wood smoke fills the air as your nose leads you towards what must surely be one of England’s best places to buy kippers! The distinctive aroma will whet your appetite long before you even arrive.
Having featured in many cooking programmes, including ‘Two Fat Ladies’, make sure you stop off at Fortune’s Kippers - the only genuine and authentic traditional smokehouse in Whitby.
