Venture into the Yorkshire mines which saw ironstone extracted for over 90 years by exploring the unique Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum.
The guided tour starts with the history and origins of ironstone mining in the area through to the eventual decline of the industry, displays of historical photographs and plans, along with a selection of artifacts that include original miners’ equipment.
As the tour continues you are given the chance to see the working aspect of the mine, such as the ventilation systems.
You then get the chance to collect your helmet and head down the into the North Drift, one of Loftus Mine’s original haulage drifts that saw over 90 years of ironstone being extracted.
Finally, listen to a 12-year-old trappy lad’s memories of his first day underground and see how the ironstone was drilled and blasted.
