Discover the story of Waltham Abbey’s secret island

Waltham Abbey, Essex

Spend a day exploring the fascinating history of gunpowder, explosives and rocket propellants at the Royal Gunpowder Mills Secret Island.

Visit Professor Nitrate’s Mad-Lab where you will find a fun-packed series of hands on experiments and activities set within the eccentric rocket scientist’s laboratory. The Professor is always on the look-out for willing volunteers to test his latest theories, so visitors will need to be prepared for fun-filled and, occasionally, smoke-filled adventures. On the Test Range you can have a go at kid’s archery, try your skills on the BB airsoft rifle range, or build and fire air rockets.

Visit the main exhibition and watch the film show telling you all about the island’s 300 year old history. Continue the exploration of the 170 acre site, either by foot, on land train or by military truck. Keep your eyes peeled for a wide variety of wildlife that lives on this secret island which is enclosed by rivers on all sides.
