Discover the stories behind the Civil War

Newark, Nottinghamshire

Find out more about some of England’s bloodiest battles at the new National Civil War Centre in Newark-upon-Trent.

The struggle to control Newark – a staunchly Royalist town – was one of the defining events of the Civil War, as it was near here that King Charles I surrendered to the Scots Army. The centre is the first of it's kind in the UK to tell the story of England's power struggles in the 17th century and brings the deadly history back to life.

While you are here, be sure to take part in the Civil War town trail, which uses augmented reality and Hollywood-style footage to bring the characters of the war at significant sites across the historic town to life. Other must visit Civil War attractions include Newark Castle, Southwell Minster, the Queen's Sconce and Southwell Minster.
