Mix ghost hunting with bird watching along an unspoilt stretch of Suffolk’s coastline.
Standing at the mouth of the River Orwell, Landguard Fort is a well known historical landmark but did you know that according to legend, the fort is awash with ghosts.
Paranormal inhabitants are said to include a lone musketeer seen by soldiers, a Victorian artilleryman with a friendly grin; and Maria, a Portuguese bride who threw herself from the ramparts – all because of a stolen handkerchief.
Children and big kids alike can take step back in time with historical re-enactment days and, follow in the footsteps of the cheeky artilleryman on a guided tour. From ghosts to gannets, next door to the fort you’ll find Landguard Nature Reserve - a site of special scientific interest teeming with birdlife.
There are a number of events held throughout the year, where you can discover more about the migrating birds. Binoculars at the ready.
