Queen Victoria chose the Isle of Wight as her favourite holiday destination, and now you can see why with a trip to her private beach.
With its fantastic Solent views, it’s no surprise that Queen Victoria chose Osborne House for her holidays. Her private beach is just a 20-minute stroll from the house and has recently been opened up to the public. This was where Victoria regularly bathed, and her children learned to swim. You can see the restored bathing machine she used and the alcove where she would sit and write letters.
You can hire a deckchair, pick up an ice cream from the stylish beach café, or check out one of the traditional Punch and Judy shows that run throughout the summer. There is plenty to explore at the beach with the area recognised as a habitat of significance, meaning you are surrounded by a variety of wildlife.
Don’t be tempted to spend all day on the beach though – no trip to Osborne would be complete without a visit round the palace itself.
