The picturesque coastal resort of South Shields is full of quintessentially English seaside experiences, gorgeous sea views and good food.
The golden-sand beaches of South Shields stretch for 6 miles (9.6km) and are surrounded by dramatic cliffs, home to precious colonies of seabirds. It’s tempting to relax on the beach all day, watching fishing boats sail in and out from the North Sea. However, there’s much more to enjoy in this bustling seaside town.
Grab an ice cream and walk along the splendid promenade as sounds of laughter fill the air from the traditional fun fair. Follow the art trail in South Marine Park, enjoy the tranquil scenery and wave to passengers on the miniature steam train as it passes the boating lake.
Then walk the short distance to Arbeia Roman Fort, part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, which offers a fascinating insight into Roman life.
South Shields is 11 miles (17.7km) east of Newcastle, which is itself 2 hours 50 minutes north of London by direct train.
