Take a seaside break 50s style

Clacton on Sea, Essex

Discover this iconic English seaside resort that people have been holidaying at since 1871 when the barrel organs on the pier first whirred into action.

Seaside resorts don’t get much more iconic than Clacton. By the time the 1950s and ‘60s came along, this was the beachside place to be seen, with families pouring in from London and the south-east to soak up the sun. While other English resort towns faded, flaked and closed their doors, Clacton has managed to keep up with the times – and today the pier is still as lively and entertaining as ever.

If you’re here with the family, there’s a whole bunch of rides waiting to whizz the kids round at a 100 screams-per-hour – like the Thunderdome Waltzer, Go Gator or The Paratrooper, which swings you all high above the North Sea.And the good thing about this place is that even if the sun doesn’t have his hat on, it’s not a biggie; simply head indoors to the undercover zone where the fun continues – with rides like the Mini Wheel and the Twister. If you’re here for the weekend, and fancy an adventure, why not have a go at some watersports with Quiver Windsurfing?

Or if you’d rather get high, then you could take a pleasure flight from Clacton Aero Club.

There’s really no limit to what you could get up to…
