Admire Blackpool's light fantastic

Blackpool, Lancashire

Every autumn, Blackpool lights up the Lancashire skies with a sparkling spectacle that has to be seen to be believed.

This world-famous, flamboyant light show has been dazzling crowds since 1912, when 10,000 bulbs were lit to celebrate Blackpool’s first visit from the royal family. Now an annual feature, the Illuminations are a key part of Blackpool's calendar and see visitors come from across the world to pay them a visit.

Featuring more than a million bulbs and a series of lasers and animatronics, the Illuminations cover six miles of Blackpool’s iconic Promenade, growing in extravagance each year. Viewable on a leisurely stroll along the promenade or on a heritage tram journey (be sure to book in advance as these sell out quickly), the Illuminations are a perfect excuse to wrap up warm on a cold autumn night.

This year, to help boost Blackpool's tourism season, the Illuminations will be shining from September 4 to January 3 2021, providing plenty of time to build an autumn or winter break around one of the North West's most iconic attractions.
