Old Sarum

You can explore for yourself one of the earliest recorded settlements in England – Old Sarum.

In England you don’t get given the term ‘Old’ in your name for nothing. That’s how you know Old Sarum has been around for a mind-bending amount of time. It’s 3,000 years older than Christ, 21 times older than the USA and 87 times older than Her Royal Highness the Queen!

Old Sarum will make you feel young – it has relics dating back thousands of years and the fort originated in the Iron Age.

It was used extensively by the Romans, the Vikings, the Normans and, of course, the English. Fortunately for the history-curious, those numerous guests have all left their mark and the fullness of that significant legacy can be viewed on site. Despite its grand age there are still walls, mounds and stones remaining for you to wander around. Graphic interpretation panels bring the site to life. Get cameras at the ready for an amazing view of Salisbury Cathedral from the old ramparts.
