Keep it real by the sea in Staithes

Staithes, Yorkshire

Climb aboard a family boat and learn how to catch, clean and cook mackerel on the beach with Real Staithes.

Real Staithes – a family-run business operating out of a rugged North York Moors fishing village – brings in the catch and keeps food miles down.

Their mackerel-fishing trips on the family boat, ‘All My Sons’, recall the days when Staithes’ boats dominated the local coast.

Hear tales of a skipper’s life, before finishing up on the beach to learn how to clean, smoke and grill mackerel that an hour before were swimming fin-loose and fancy free in the North Sea.

Sustainable food is also at the heart of Real Straithes’ other trips and experiences – like the foreshore discovery walks, where you help haul in lobster pots, bait lines and forage for shellfish and edible seaweed.

Lunch is campfire soup, boiled lobster, handpicked seafood and homemade cake, served up at a ramshackle fisherman’s hut in a hideaway corner of the coast.
