Experience coastal nature in the raw in Northumberland.
For raw and remote coastal nature at its very best, Northumberland is the place to head to.
Base yourself at Craster Village, famous for its smoked kippers from Robson’s Smokery and take the romantic and utterly beguiling walk along rocks or cliff top grass to Dunstanburgh Castle, a striking ruin dating back to 1313. Don’t forget your camera for some dramatic shots and on your return head to the Jolly Fisherman and tuck into Craster kipper pâté and crab sandwiches.
The walk from Seahouses to Bamburgh is equally spectacular. Bamburgh Castle is one of the best preserved castles in the country and the beach is a vast swathe of pale yellow silky sand. Take a bracing dip in the sea or invest in a reasonable priced wetsuit from the Co-op in Seahouses where you can also pick up a surfboard. Hop over to the historic Holy Island while the tide is out.
