Explore the ruins of Ashby Castle

Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire

Sir Walter Scott’s classic novel of 1819, Ivanhoe featured Ashby Castle as the backdrop to the famous jousting scenes.

Pay a visit to Ashby Castle and stand in the grounds and picture yourselves in the midst of the action. Find out about the former manor house’s colourful history and how it reached castle status in the 15th century. Pick up an audio tour and hear light hearted tales about the castle, like how the impressive keep-like Hastings Tower was added – a castle found within a castle.

Find the underground passage, possibly created during the Civil War, and follow it between the tower and the kitchen. Visitors today can still climb the tower even though much of it was destroyed during the war. You’ll be rewarded with amazing views of the ancient market town of Ashby de la Zouch and stunning countryside.  Whilst in the area take a stroll down the High Street where you will find well known high street brands as well as quirky independent shops.
