Explore the bustling harbour at Maryport

Maryport, Cumbria

Watch brightly-coloured trawlers unload the days’ catch, enjoy a bracing walk or coastal cycle, sample locally caught fish or go to a festival.

The Georgian harbours at Maryport and Whitehaven are a hive of activity with independent fishermen earning their living, holiday makers mooring up at the Marinas and locals enjoying fresh sea air.

Great coastal walks and cycle paths mean you can work up an appetite and then tuck into locally caught fish and chips from established shops or harbour side restaurants. Stock up on the local catch from fresh fish shops so you can recreate the recipes at home.

Festivals make these towns really special. Maryport Harbour Festival’s Trawler Race is fantastic with boats travelling from the Isle of Man to compete against the locals (sometimes in fancy dress). Music plays a big part with local and national bands playing the Harbour Festival and international acts in town for Maryport Blues. Whitehaven Festival is family friendly with maritime events, music, street art, markets and food.
