Walk the Wall at Steel Rigg

Steel Rigg, Northumberland

Take a walk around Steel Rigg and Crag Lough to see how the Romans used the natural landscape to maximise the strength of the Empire's frontier.

One of the most iconic features in the Northumbrian landscape, the cliff face of Steel Rigg shows how the Romans incorporated this natural phenomenon into their defences against the barbarians.

Follow the Hadrian’s Wall Path up the slopes and along the top of the crag. Stand at the Cawfields Milecastle as Roman soldiers would have done 2000 years ago. Take a moment to marvel in possibly the most impressive views of the Tyne Valley.

Continue west to the iconic Sycamore Gap – known for appearing in the Kevin Costner film ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’.

A circular route around Crag Lough lake at the foot of the imposing crag face presents the barbarians view – a scenic picnic spot to end explorations.
