Tease your taste buds at York’s Chocolate Story

York, North Yorkshire

Visit York, one of England’s most historic chocolate heartlands and get a taste of the city’s 300-year love affair with the cocoa bean.

Before you ask, the answer is yes. There will be samples available during your tour of York’s Chocolate Story. Now down to business. The city that was once host to Romans, Vikings and Saxons also proudly delights in its long history with the cocoa bean, dating back to 1725.

Two of England’s best-loved confectionary manufacturers, Rowntree’s and Terry’s of York, started life in this city. Many favourite chocolate bars, jelly sweets and wafer biscuit brands were also born here, including the world-famous KitKat bar.

Follow centuries of cocoa history, learn local chocolate-making secrets and try your hand at chocolate lolly-making along the way. Afterwards, move on to York Cocoa House for chocolate-themed afternoon tea, or to Monk Bar Chocolatiers, for amazing hand-moulded treats in the shape of everything from stilettos to swans. The museum is in central York, 3 hours north from London by train.
