With more than 400 caves carved into the soft sandstone rock beneath the city, Nottingham has been known for its caves for centuries.
Today, you can still visit many of the caves, some of which date back to medieval times.
Take a tour of the City of Caves visitor attraction, which features a medieval tannery, WWII bomb shelter and some of the homes where people lived when this part of Nottingham was Europe's most notorious slum town in the 19th century.
Explore the caves carved beneath Nottingham Castle and hear of their gruesome history, or simply dine in one of them - some of the pubs are carved into the rock and offer a special in-cave experience. Try Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem and the Hand & Heart pub to get started.
