Cycle along the old coastal railway line to Whitby

It’s fairly level cycling for the most part, heading past smugglers’ haunts, hidden beaches and hideaway hamlets – perfect if you always wanted to be in the Famous Five. For a start, there’s lemonade and cake at the old station tearoom in Cloughton, followed by a climb down through the woods at Hayburn Wyke to go rock hopping on giant beach boulders.

Then you can investigate the mystery of Ravenscar – the ‘Town That Never Was’ – before exploring the winding streets and alleys of Robin Hood's Bay. Finally, zoom over a 120-foot-high viaduct taking you into historic Whitby, where the ghosts of Dracula and Captain Cook await. Fish and chips are obligatory!

There’s bike hire at Trailways at Hawsker, right on the Cinder Track, or park at Ravenscar and take your own bike on a yesteryear adventure.
