hildren down coal mines, stern school masters cracking the cane, no TV, computers or central heating – the Victorian period certainly doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs.
But it’s a different story at Blists Hill Victorian Town where you can see how these folks really lived and got their kicks.
First thing’s first, cash in your modern money for some tokens to spend on bustling Canal Street at the centre of the Victorian town. Explore the parade of original shops and you’ll discover remedies for all sorts of ailments in the chemist and a plethora of colourful confectionary in the sweetshop.
If you want more retro retail therapy then improve your dress sense with some period fashion at the General Draper and Outfitters before having your portrait taken in the photographers.
As you wander around, you’ll see the townsfolk going about their business including the local policeman on his beat and a housewife hard at work in her cottage. It’s not all work and no play though – there’s a fairground full of rides and a horse and cart looking for passengers.
With history living and breathing around you, time travel has never been easier; the hard part is returning to the 21st century.
