Free guided walking tours exploring Exeter
T
he guides, adorned in red coats, and with bags of enthusiasm take you on a guided tour of this historic city in South-West England.
These informative volunteers offer a variety of 90-minute free tours around the city. All you need to do is decide what aspect of the city’s rich heritage you want to explore and then meet your guide.
With over 2000 years of history to explore, the walking routes take in the historic Quay, the 11th century Castle Gatehouse, the Roman City Wall and the Gothic Cathedral. One look at the stunning ceiling and you can understand why pilgrims have been making their way there since medieval times.
Exeter also has plenty of quirky sites to enjoy: squeeze yourself down the narrowest street in the country - only 25 inches (65 cm) at its narrowest or admire ‘the house that moved’, a Tudor building moved in its entirety in the sixties to make way for a new road. For a spooky stroll, the Ghosts and Legends tour is full of chilling tales and spine-chilling spots whereas the Murder and Mayhem fills you in on a turbulent past of riots, murder, burnings, hangings and the plague – lovely!
