Indulge your Jane Austen fantasies...
I
t seems that even an Oscar-nominated actress can’t compete with the drama of Stanage’s craggy rock face, which looks out over a meandering valley in Derbyshire.
While playing a starring role in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice blockbuster, it managed to upstage Keira Knightley (well, almost).
This is the English landscape at its empty best, which is why this rocky outcrop has become a favourite for climbers and walkers. Clamber up The Unconquerables, look out over Crow Chin or take a break (if you dare) in Goliath’s Groove.
Of course, after a day up on the moors you’ll probably be wishing for a comfortable bed and warm shower, so make a beeline for Melbourne House.
If you haven’t quite satisfied your Jane Austen fantasies sufficiently, this 300-year-old, Grade-II bed and breakfast should sort you out – and it provides a great base for a quick bit of shopping in nearby Bakewell.
