Impressive architectural statements

I

t’s all too easy to walk through a city and ignore the architecture that exists above eye level. In doing so, you can miss a city’s not-to-secret history. Not so in Norwich.

As Britain’s most complete medieval city, with a church for every week of the year, the city’s architectural heritage practically screams out at you.

Of all the spires you can see pricking the horizon, the most noticeable is that of Norwich Cathedral. Built in 1145, it has the second tallest spire in the country and a neck-creakingly high ceiling to match. Equally prominent is the keep of the Norman Castle, which towers over the city from its position on top of a hill.

Both are part of the Norwich Twelve, a collection of the city’s finest buildings and a good place to start any tour. If you really fancy testing your knowledge of architecture, head to the Great Hospital and attempt to identify the mish-mash of styles.

As well as historic buildings, Norwich also has its share of cutting-edge designs, none more impressive than the glass-fronted Forum which houses the city’s library and tourist information centre.

We recommend the Forum’s café as a great place to relax and take in the surroundings before heading off out into the architectural wilds once again.
