Shopping in East London

Markets and boutiques galore

I

f you’re after something vintage, original, designer or all three, then get thee to Spitalfields and Brick Lane in East London. Put simply, it’s clothes shopping Nirvana – shop after shop selling vintage goodies and fledgling designer pieces.

Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit, when the backstreets come alive with markets and pop-up shops. For young edgy designers, wholesome homemade food and bespoke interior items, head to the Sunday UpMarket or the Backyard Market in the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane.

Alternatively, if retro is your thing then nip over to Absolute Vintage on Hanbury Street, which is packed with obscure, long-forgotten brands, sitting alongside more familiar designers at prices that could still be in the Seventies. Meanwhile, another great place to try is the warehouse-sized Beyond Retro on Cheshire Street.

Finally, if you’ve still got the energy why not round off your trip with a wander through Dray Walk, stopping off at Rough Trade to pick up some vinyl for your listening pleasure – or Gloria’s for the best box-fresh import sneakers?

Sounds like the perfect day to us.
