f you’re looking to whisk your significant other off somewhere really romantic, then forget the same old hotel or cosy B&B and take them to Catton Hall instead.

After all, it inspired Lord Byron to put pen to paper – and he certainly knew a thing or two about how to woo someone.

Along with all the other antiques, paintings and priceless treasures on display here, you’ll find an original Byron manuscript containing those famous lines “She walks in beauty, like the night...”plus a portrait of Anne Beatrix, the poem's lucky subject – who was one of Catton Hall’s previous châtelaines.

In fact the hall has been in the same family since 1405, and if you’re here for the weekend you could have dinner with the Neilsons and get them to tell you a bit about the estate’s rather fascinating history. Next day, after tucking yourselves up in one of the four-poster bedrooms, you can take a stroll around the elaborate gardens.
