t may just look like a scenic spot for an afternoon walk (which it most definitely is), but there's a lot more to Pendle Hill than meets the eye.

In fact this ominous grassy mound rising up out of the surrounding foothills is a constant reminder of the famous witch trials, which began here in the early 1600s - where 10 local people were put to death for being witches.

It all took place around 80 years before the famous Salem witch trials took place in Massachusetts, USA, and began when a local woman, Alizon Device was accused of using sorcery to kill a travelling salesman.

Things escalated to the point where a whole bunch of locals from surrounding villages were implicated, in a trial that gripped the country.

This scenic walking trail begins in the village car park at Barley before taking you through some of the key spots which featured in the trial, including Faugh's Quarry – where Elizabeth Demdike claimed that she met the devil – and of course, Pendle Hill.

The circular route is about 7.5 miles, so you might want to grab some sandwiches from the shop in Barley before you set off.

Oh, and keep an eye out for black cats along the way...
