Pay the donkeys a visit

C

all us old fashioned, but our favourite thing about Weston is the donkeys.

They’ve been patiently plodding up and down the sand since 1886 (not the same ones of course), and are still run by the original family – the Magers.

Don’t feel too sorry for these beasts of burden, though; the donkeys only work seven months a year – spending the rest of their time chilling out on nearby farms. Nice work if you can get it.

If you’re a little too big for a donkey ride, though, there’s still lots to love about the beach here. For starters, it’s huge – giving you loads of space to throw down a towel, and crack open the hamper while the kids get busy with their buckets and spades.

Another thing you should check out while you’re here is the pier. Originally built in 1904, it was one of the original great British piers – and is still going strong. In fact it’s more exciting now than ever, with roller-coasters, a crazy circus and a 4D cinema –combining exciting 3D films with moving seats and blasts of air and water, which keep you on the edge of your seat.

Other things to check out include the rather excellent Helicopter Museum and the SeaQuarium, which is packed with weird and wonderful creatures. Nothing as cute as those donkeys, though…
