Take a romantic stroll along the 900-year-old Shambles in York
H
istoric York is home to some of the most picturesque streets in England. Simply walking down the 900-year-old Shambles hand-in-hand gives you a tingle down your spine.
There are plenty of modern boutiques to shuffle through, including Vivienne Westwood down Blake Street and Cath Kidston.
One of the most romantic times of year to visit, is on a crisp wintery day. Step inside York Minster, the largest medieval gothic cathedral in northern Europe with its famous Rose Window, and see it lit by candlelight. Take a walk by the picturesque River Ouse or even set off on a boat trip.
There are plenty of great riverside pubs, such as the Kings Arms, where you can see the watermarks on the wall where past floods have engulfed the place.
If you fancy a real taste of York, head to Bettys Café Tea Rooms in St Helens Square for a piping hot cup of Yorkshire tea and some tempting comfort food. Sweet nothings over heart-shaped cream cakes, anyone? Come nightfall why not embark on one of the spooky Ghost Tours? A great excuse to hold one another tight.
