Challenge, inspire, inform and delight
Y
orkshire Sculpture Park is not your average gallery; for starters there’s no dehumidifier in sight and no one raises an eyebrow if your mobile goes off.
This is art outdoors, open to the elements 365 days a year. Set in 500 acres of 18th-century parkland on the Bretton Estate, the YSP houses the largest open-air display of bronzes by local hero Henry Moore – including his famous Reclining Mother and Child. There are sculptures by Rodin and Andy Goldsworthy, too – and best of all, it’s free to get in.
FYI: some of the pieces might have changed by the time you get here. The park is described as a “gallery without walls” because of its constantly changing exhibits. But whichever artworks are on show (and we can promise they’ll be worth a look), everyone is encouraged to touch and feel.
Our top tips? Allow plenty of time – especially if you want to check out the new Underground Gallery – and bring a pair of comfortable shoes. You wouldn’t want to suffer for your art.
