Taking place across two weeks in late June and early July, Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event still played on grass, with 14 titles up for grabs across 19 courts. That is, if rain doesn’t stop play – in which case you might end up with another impromptu Cliff Richard concert, as happened on Centre Court in 1996.

Around 250 ball boys and girls have been helping the games run smoothly since 1877, decked out in their official green and purple outfits, and tickets for the show courts (the fabled Centre Court, plus courts 1 and 2) are sold through a public ballot –making them pretty hard to come by.

Instead, you could always indulge in that other favourite national tradition and join one of the epic (sometimes overnight) queues, for entry to the grounds – or simply grab a picnic rug and settle down on ‘Henman Hill’ (or ‘Murray’s Mound’, depending how well Andy’s doing) to soak up the atmosphere on the big screen.
