A trendy pocket of East London
S
o it’s a teeny-tiny bit pretentious – and, yes, the concentration of plaid trousers is higher than the national average – but don’t let that put you off.
This trendy pocket of East London hosts some of the best up-and-coming talent the art world has to offer. Want to spot the next Tracey Emin or Damien Hirst? Then head over for a good look at what’s hanging on the walls (or even from the ceiling).
While they’re all ridiculously cool, each of Vyner Street’s 20 or so galleries has its own character: The Vegas Gallery, for example, tends to be the most wacky and experimental, showing strange sculptures made from everyday objects; meanwhile, Wilkinson has a more chilled-out vibe – focusing on projection and video.
And if you’ve a penchant for taxidermy and other bizarreness, head just round the corner to Viktor Wynd Fine Art.
To really experience the street in full swing, come here on the first Thursday of the month, when the galleries are open later. And if you don’t see anything you fancy, it’s still fun to see all that pensive, contemplative chin-stroking, as critics try to fathom out the meaning of it all (yeah but is it art?).
