A twenty mile circular cycle ride

W

hen Freddie Mercury hollered, “Get on your bike and ride”, he probably wasn’t imagining a pedal-powered jaunt through the Somerset countryside but that’s beside the point.

When a 20-mile circular route allows you to visit two impressive historic houses and experience the best of the West when it comes to scenery, it really is time to get on your bike.

The cycling trail takes you from Barrington Court to the impressive Montacute House, offering stunning views over the Quantock Hills, the Blackdowns and the Somerset Levels along the way.

You’ll also pass through charming settlements like the hamstone village of Montacute. There are a couple of hills to tackle but then vistas this good shouldn’t come without a bit of effort.

Over the River Parratt

The Somerset Levels are also alive with wildlife so there are plenty of opportunities to spot rare birds such as the majestic buzzards hovering overhead. As you cycle over the River Parrett, keep your eyes peeled for otters and in the spring, you should see yellow brimstone butterflies busying themselves in the blossoming orchards.

As the saying goes, it’s not the destination that counts but the journey. In this case, however, both are equally memorable with the Elizabethan mansion Montacute House full of antiquities and portraits.

If your calves allow it, walk up to St Michael’s Hill for views over the Somerset Plains to Glastonbury Tor and a well-deserved sense of achievement.
