Family-friendly, 8 mile cycle ride
I
s there any better way to spend an afternoon than pedalling your way through a verdant river valley? Not if it’s the Gibside cycle trail, that’s for sure.
Taking you from the hustle and bustle of the Tyne quayside to the picturesque forest and waterways of Derwent Haugh Country Park, it’s pretty much the most fun you can have in this neck of the woods.
The eight-mile route is deliciously smooth, good for those without a padded saddle or un-Chris Hoy like thighs. Yet it is difficult enough to remain a challenge, and the traffic-free winding path is great for testing your balance.
Taking you from Newcastle and Gateshead along an old railway line, the path dissects some of the North’s most beautiful countryside. For that wind in the air feeling of liberation, crank up through the gears, pump those legs, and seek out that faded yellow jersey from the back of Dad’s cupboard.
Be sure to keep your head up and your eyes open – there are red kites soaring in the sky and plenty of views to take in. And if you spot one of many secluded vistas then skid your way into an idyllic woodland glade for a picnic.
You can bet your puncture repair kit that the whole family will have a great day when they head to Gibside.
