No need to gallop

F

ancy yourself as a modern-day Mr Darcy? Well squeeze into those breeches and head to the Cumbrian countryside, for a romantic weekend on horseback.

Even if your skills aren’t up to scratch, it still looks pretty at a sensible plod. A riding tour allows you to experience the dramatic Lake District scenery from a different point of view, accessing areas that are off-limits to cars.

And don’t worry if your riding experience is more ‘donkey derby’ than Pride and Prejudice, Hipshow Riding Stables has trails to suit all sorts. They can even match you with the right horse.

Choose from giant Diva (a Hunter who “rides like a Ferrari”), ‘gentle Sam’ (the beginners’ favourite), and various other steeds in between. There’s even a pony, Jade, who’s perfect for youngsters – providing scope for an exciting family day out.

Treks last from one hour to two days, with accommodation in a cute cottage two miles north of Kendal. Colin Firth eat your heart out.
