Rumoured to be England’s most haunted city...

O

ver several centuries Chester has been invaded by Celts, Vikings and of course the Romans, but nowadays it’s occupied by an altogether darker presence (and no, we don’t mean the Saturday shoppers).

This is allegedly England’s most haunted city, and among Chester’s winding alleyways, ancient crypts and damp cellars lurk a number of non-too-shy ghosts.

‘Charlie’ and ‘Herbert’ (as they’re affectionately known by locals) are the black-cowled phantom monks who prowl about outside the Habitat shop on Pepper Street. Maybe they’ve got a thing for that new range of cushions that’s just come in.

Meanwhile, one of Chester’s most popular French restaurants (formerly the site of the Old Fire Station) is haunted by Old Jack, a ghostly figure in a brass helmet and full fireman’s uniform; makes you think twice about nipping out for an after-dinner smoke, eh?

If you’re feeling brave enough, why not join one of the city’s Ghost Tours, which depart at 7.30pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from the Town Hall during the summer, and every Friday the rest of the year.

Prepare yourself, though; it’s scary stuff...
