Vintage campers bursting with character
G
et behind the wheel of a VW camper van and things change. Sat nav isn’t cool anymore, only wimps use power steering and cruise control is reserved solely for poseurs.
There are no schedules when you hire an O’Connor VW, just the open road. Especially in this part of the world, where traffic jams are almost unheard of.
Head to nearby Dartmoor for a picnic; ‘Kissinger’ (the elder statesman of the fleet) comes with crockery, a fridge and an extra outdoor table and chairs so you can enjoy the sunshine with a chilled glass of wine – once you’ve finished driving of course. Alcohol isn’t included but just about everything else is – including a kitchen sink and, helpfully, a corkscrew.
If you want to scare a few sheep along the way, opt for ‘Shiny Norman’ with his canary-yellow paintwork and sporty wheels. Inside, however, he’s surprisingly spacious, sleeping five in a double bed, bunk and two hammocks, all in his gleaming 1974 Viking interior. Cooool.
