Friendly camping near the Devonshire coast

I

f the word “camping” sends shivers down your spine, then you might want to look at Hillhead Caravan Park. Perched on a Devon hill, between the coast and the River Dart, it looks out over the sea in one direction, and rolling fields in the other, with hard-standing pitches and electric hook-ups for your creature comforts.

Perhaps the best bit, though, is that the secluded Mansands Beach is only a short, scenic stroll away. From here you can set off on foot along the clifftop paths – or throw down a rug and whip out the bucket and spade.

Back at the park, gleaming facilities include a heated pool, play area, hot showers and hairdryers(!). And once you’ve washed the sand out of your hair, why not head along to nearby Brixham, where old fishing cottages are sprinkled over the hillside surrounding the harbour.

The walk to the marina is pretty special (the park’s staff will give you directions) or grab a bus from right outside; and if you’re feeling more adventurous, why not catch the ferry to Dartmouth?

Back at the site, you can cook up a feast (or just some noodles) in the kitchen – or simply head to Nico’s bar and restaurant. It’s like camping, but not as you know it.
