Tee off at one of best golf courses in the world
t the end of 2010 four of the top ten golfers in the world came from England (Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter), so it’s no surprise that England also boasts some of the best golf courses in the world.
A Royal Tee
A great place to start is the aptly named Golf Coast , in the northwest and home to 20 of the best links course in the country, if not the world. It boasts three famous Royal links courses – Birkdale , Liverpool and Lytham & St Annes . The oldest of these date back to 1869 and between them they have hosted more than 20 British Open championships.
England's Golf Coast
However with 160 golf courses within an hour’s drive of Southport , there is no shortage of other options in the North West, most of which won’t cost you as many lost golf balls as the Royal courses. For a complete list check out www.englandsgolfcoast.com .
The British Open
Away from the North West, Kent boasts the stunning Royal St George’s , the host of the 2011 British Open. 30 miles west of London is Sunningdale’s old and new courses, which have been described as the best 36 holes in the golfing world.
But with over 1900 golf clubs in England, no matter where you are, you can always find a quality course to scratch the golfing itch.
