Outstanding Contribution to Tourism
Every year the Board of VisitEngland has the challenge of deciding who should win this prestigious award
his year, there will essentially be 70,000 winners of the Outstanding Contribution to Tourism, as the award goes to the Games Makers – those truly ebullient individuals who welcomed us with a warm smile and a wave to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Gamesmakers’ contribution has been acknowledged at the highest level. Prime Minister David Cameron said:
“Of all the highlights of our 2012 summer of sport, the volunteers were perhaps the most memorable. We all want to harness that spirit and ensure that what happened last summer is the beginning of a great volunteering legacy for our country.”
The volunteers became the face of the Games. Critical to the welcome and the goodbye, they also directed the lost, assisted the stranded, staffed venues, provided information and in some cases, sang cheerful songs through a loud hailer simply for the fun of it!
They were ambassadors not just for London 2012, but for the UK. They showed great humour, grace under pressure and an amazing team spirit. The warm welcome and friendly assistance they gave people will be remembered fondly for many years to come.
