Food and drink

England is a food and drink connoisseur.

Many regions produce their own delicacies from clotted cream in Devon and Cornwall to brown ale in Newcastle and chocolate in York. Many high profile chefs hail from England like Jamie Oliver, Gordan Ramsey, Heston Blumenthal and Brian Turner. Pioneering cookery writers and home economists Mrs Beeton, Fanny Craddock and Marguerite Patten led the way from England.

There are over 50 Michelin-starred restaurants in London alone.

The UK introduces an average of 10,000 new food and drink products and supplies over five billion cases of products internationally each year.

We are known for our well-regulated and high quality food and drink manufacturing industry with a strong investment in research and development.

Kellogg’s, PepsiCo and Nestlé all base their research operations in the UK. Nottingham, Leeds and Newcastle universities focus on food science and food processing companies cluster in the North East.

We top the menu when it comes to internationally renowned restaurant hubs. Foodies flock to Rock and Padstow, Cornwall, for gourmet seafood. Birmingham, Manchester and Leicester spice things up with balti restaurants, while London and Manchester sizzle with Chinatown eateries.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs injects £3 billion into UK agriculture. The UK's organic food market is the third largest in Europe and the government is encouraging a move to more sustainable farming methods.

England enjoys a tipple with national breweries in Bedford, Nottingham and Newcastle. We are currently gaining ground in the world of wine with over 400 vineyards in the UK.
