Keep cosy and carry on reading

It’s that time of year where there is nothing more appealing on a winter's day than to curl up with a book. And we’ve found a most excellent place to do this. Barter Books in Alnwick, Northumberland is everything you could ever want from a good proper bookshop. Housed in a Victorian railway station building, rows and rows of bookcases stretch tantalisingly with a model train chuffing reassuringly along the top of them. Found a good read? Snuggle up in a cosy chair by the open fire in the former waiting room or get a bite to eat in the station buffet.

While you’re here you might not know that you’re also at the birthplace of the boom in 'Keep Calm and Carry On' products. The simple, no-nonsense phrase is found plastered across everything from birthday cards to baby-grows nowadays, but it all began here when the owner of Barter Books found a Second World War poster in the shop and decided to put it up on display… See the full story in this cute short film:

What's your favourite cosy bookshop you've found in England?
