Quality Assessment for your Accommodation

Participating in VisitEngland’s National Quality Assessment Scheme and gaining an official VisitEngland star rating can help you to improve your guest experience, helping your business to thrive.

VisitEngland Star Ratings

Holding an independently awarded star rating from the largest quality assessment scheme in the country shows that you are committed to quality, gives potential guests a label they can trust and provides clear expectations for customers when booking.

VisitEngland star ratings are awarded based on the quality of your facilities, services and hospitality provided. You will be visited by one of VisitEngland’s highly trained and professional quality assessors, who will work with you to maximise the potential of your business. All participants receive an annual assessment and a comprehensive written report of the assessor’s experience, providing you with valuable feedback on the areas which could be addressed to consolidate or improve your rating. The assessors are there to help, giving you tailored advice and guidance specific to your business needs. This could extend to marketing advice, help with legislation and ideas for suppliers.

Your business might also be eligible for VisitEngland’s Gold, Silver and Breakfast Awards. These awards complement star ratings by recognising businesses which exceed guest expectations, allowing you to stand out from your competitors. All participants have unlimited use of the official VisitEngland quality marque in their promotional material, featuring the distinctive and recognisable Tudor rose. Since 2006, hotel and guest accommodation official star ratings have shared a common standard between VisitEngland, VisitScotland, Visit Wales, Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the AA.

The scheme is delivered on behalf of VisitEngland by Quality in Tourism. To find out more information on the schemes, including criteria, fees and how to apply, visit the Quality in Tourism website.

Please note does not provide listings for individual businesses in the scheme, but your destination organisation (DO) may be able to help promote your business both online and in print.

VisitEngland Moderation Team

VisitEngland has a moderation team to monitor the quality, consistency and accuracy of Quality in Tourism’s assessment visits and written reports, to ensure that you receive the highest level of service as a scheme participant. The process involves randomly selecting and evaluating a number of assessment reports each month. A sample of these are then selected for ‘cover’ visits, which enable the moderator to confirm the accuracy of the scoring and grading by the assessor. These visits are an opportunity for you to ask questions and raise any issues you may have with the scheme criteria, all of which is fed back directly to the Enterprise team at VisitEngland. The moderation team is constantly looking for examples of best practice and exceptional businesses for use in special features or as case studies, so please welcome their visit.
